چکیده

The possibility of using paper mill lime sludge as a soil amendment in an acid soil was investigated. Sludge used contained 58.4% calcium carbonates plus a small amount of heavy metals. A pot experiment was conducted with an acid soil and Sorghum vulgaris variety speed seed as test plant. Treatments with three replicates consisted of 0, 0.5 and 1, 2 and 4% paper mill lime sludge (L0, L0.5, L1, L2 and L4, respectively). Shoot were harvested after 60 days and dry matter yield was determined after drying of the harvested shoots at 70°C for 48h. Subsamples of dry shoots were ground and then dryashed in a furnace at 550°C and then extracted with 2N HCl. The concentrations of P, K, Fe, Mn and Zn were measured in the extracts. Results showed that paper mill sludge significantly increased pH, which was proportional to the application rate of paper mill sludge. The application of 2% sludge (based on soil dry mass) remarkably increased shoot dry matter and P, K, Fe, Mn, K and P uptake.

Use of Sludge from Kraft Mill Wastewater Treatment as Improver of Volcanic Soils: Effect on Soil Biological Parameters

Sludge from kraft mill wastewater treatment was applied on two soils derived from volcanic ashes and, the effect on biological parameters of the soils was evaluated. The soils used in this study were an Andisol belonging of Gorbea Series and an Ultisol belonging of Collipulli Series. The sludge was added at rates of 0, 10, 20, 30 and 50 t ha. Previously, germination of red clover (Trifolium pra...

Translocation of micronutrients in French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) grown on soil amended with paper mill sludge

Translocation of micronutrients was investigated in Phaseolus vulgaris (var. Annapurna) grown on soil amended with paper mill sludge. The plants of P. vulgaris were grown in soil amended with 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% paper mill sludge to study the accumulation and translocation of iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr) and lead (Pb) in plant parts (shoot, root, leave...

Using Paper Mill Sludge and Compost in Potato Production: Firs

Introduction and Research Objectives Use of organic by-products as soil amendments in agricultural production exemplifies a strategy for converting wastes to resources. Paper mill sludge is one of the largest underutilized organic by-products in Wisconsin. Paper mill sludge (PS) generation in Wisconsin increases approximately 5% per year, and 70% of all PS generated currently (740,000 dry tons)...

Effect of Metal Pickling and Electroplating Industrial Sludge-Borne Heavy Metals on Wheat (Triticum aesativum) Seedling Growth

A pot culture study has been undertaken to evaluate the effect of rolling and pickling industrial sludge amendments on growth response and bioaccumulation of heavy metal in wheat seedlings. Processed acidic waste was first treated with three doses of lime (0, 0.5 and 1%) and then mixed with two soils in different ratios (0, 10 and 20%). Samples were filled in earthen pots (2Kg/pot) one week bef...

Improved Management of Acid Sulfate Soils for Rice Production in Casamance, Senegal

Casamance is a region in southern Senegal that traditionally produces rainfed rice, but Senegal produces only 1/3 of its rice consumption. Lowland areas, where rice is primarily produced, have acid sulfate soils with low pH and potential aluminum and iron toxicity. The goal of this work was to determine if soil amendments can alleviate soil acidity, counteract the negative biogeochemical effect...
